AI Photo Controversy: Online Voters’ Register Is Not Final, INEC Says

Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said the preliminary voters’ register published online on 26 October is not the final certified register. Mohammed Kudu Haruna, chair of the Information and Voter Education Committee, said the register remains subject to verification and correction following the Display, Claims and Objections exercise held at registration areas from 9 to 15 October. INEC is reviewing flagged records, including suspicious photographs that may have been AI-generated, and examining possible technical or procedural lapses. Certification of the final register is scheduled for 15 December 2026.
