Politicians risk N5m fine, jail for campaign offences - INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) warned politicians that using abusive or threatening language during campaigns could lead to heavy fines or imprisonment under the Electoral Act 2026. INEC's Chief Press Secretary, Adedayo Oketola, stated that campaign statements become electoral intimidation when they involve threats or hate speech. The law also prohibits language that could incite violence or create fear among voters.
