Mediterranean migrant deaths mounting towards 1,000 in 2026: UN

More than 180 people are feared dead or missing in shipwrecks across the Mediterranean over the past 10 days, bringing the total to nearly 1,000 deaths since the start of 2026. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported that 765 people had died in the Central Mediterranean, exceeding last year's total for the same period by over 460. The latest incident occurred on Sunday, when more than 80 migrants went missing after their boat capsized due to rough weather.
