In 2024, global fisheries and aquaculture production reached a record 235 million tonnes, with 90% destined for human consumption. Africa produced 7.1 million tonnes from marine capture and 3.7 million tonnes from inland waters. Aquatic foods provide on average 19% of animal protein in Africa, yet per capita availability remains the lowest in the world. FAO's Blue Transformation aims to sustainably increase aquatic food production while strengthening food security.
