Algeria: at least 11 dead in orphanage fire near Algiers

At least eleven people were killed and nineteen others injured in a fire at an orphanage in El-Mohammadia, eastern suburb of Algiers, during the night of July 15-16, 2026. The fire broke out at the Fondation de l’enfance assistée around 3 a.m. Rescue services controlled the flames and evacuated victims, but extinguishing operations were still ongoing Thursday morning. Authorities have not specified the victims' ages nor the cause of the fire; an investigation is underway.
