Benin: A Woman Incarcerated in Porto-Novo for Stealing One Million FCFA from Her Mother-in-Law

A 26-year-old woman was presented on June 3, 2026, before the Porto-Novo tribunal for stealing one million FCFA from her mother-in-law in Ekpè-Dandji, Sèmè-Podji. The accused allegedly discovered the money hidden in a cushion and split 850,000 FCFA with a pregnant accomplice who fled. Incarcerated for three weeks at Porto-Novo civil prison, she has already repaid 250,000 FCFA, including 100,000 from her husband. The case was adjourned to June 17, 2026, to decide on the remaining 750,000 FCFA.
