Botswana: Churches oppose legalization of same-sex marriage

A same-sex couple, Bonolo Selelo (41) and Tsholofelo Kumile (39), is suing the Botswana government to overturn laws banning same-sex marriage, which they argue are unconstitutional. Religious groups such as the Evangelical Fellowship of Botswana and the Dingwetsi association strongly oppose the move, stating that same-sex marriage violates customary law and Christian beliefs. South Africa remains the only African country to recognize same-sex marriage, though homosexuality was decriminalized in Botswana in 2019.
