Colombia has approved plans to cull up to 80 hippos in a central region, as announced by Environment Minister Irene Velez. These animals, introduced by drug lord Pablo Escobar in the 1980s, have grown to an estimated population of around 170. Authorities state that the hippos pose a threat to villagers and compete for food with endemic wildlife, despite their popularity as a tourist attraction.
