Khoi leaders demand removal of family’s hut from Castle of Good Hope
Khoi royal houses and traditional leaders have demanded that Wanga Kape and her family leave Cape Town’s Castle of Good Hope and demolish the hut they built on its grounds. The confrontation began on Sunday, 18 October, when a delegation from the Oedasoa Cochoqua Royal Kingdom, led by ambassador Eugene Gantimo Sias, arrived; ROLESA leaders returned on Monday to demand the family’s removal. Sias said the family had not followed Khoi customary law, which requires people settling in a new area to approach the local chief, while stressing that the leaders were not disputing Kape’s identity. Kape could not be reached for comment on Monday after leaving her children at the Castle.
