Onion price jumps 900% to N300,000 in 6 months

In Nigeria, the price of a 120kg bag of onions rose from N30,000 in April 2026 to about N300,000 in October. Aliyu Isah, president of the National Onion Producers, Processors and Marketers Association of Nigeria (NOPPMAN), attributed the increase to post-harvest losses exceeding 51%, caused by inadequate storage, fires and unsuitable seeds introduced during the 2024–2025 growing season. The seed problem reportedly caused losses of nearly N100 billion, while proposed government support for seeds and farm inputs was still under discussion. Isah expects new supplies from November and hopes the harvest will ease prices, provided storage improves and farmers receive timely support.
