According to a Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) survey for May 2026, prices of rice, bread, maize flour, sugar, and other staples are expected to rise due to global tensions, particularly the US-Israel-Iran conflict disrupting supply chains. In contrast, prices of vegetables like spinach, sukuma wiki, and traditional vegetables are expected to fall thanks to good harvests from the March-May 2026 long rains. The survey also shows that 65% of respondents expect inflation to rise, down from 81% in April, while transport costs remain the biggest driver of food prices.
