United States: In Washington, an association works for the preservation of African American cemeteries

The Black Georgetown Foundation is committed to preserving the memory of the eight to ten thousand people buried in two African American cemeteries in Georgetown, Washington. These cemeteries, the Mount Zion Church cemetery founded in 1802 and the Female Union Band Society cemetery established in 1842, have suffered from decades of neglect. The foundation believes it is their spiritual obligation to honor and preserve the memory of those resting in these sites.
