The Archdiocese of New York has agreed to pay more than $800 million to hundreds of victims of sexual abuse by clergy. The agreement, expected to be formally signed in early November, will provide approximately 1,300 victims with at least $250,000 each, with potentially larger payments based on the severity of the abuse. Archbishop Ronald Hicks said he hoped the settlement would bring victims some measure of healing and reconciliation. The deal follows years of negotiations and comes amid other U.S. diocesan settlements, including a $395 million agreement announced by the Archdiocese of San Francisco in June.
