Ituri: Clashes between FARDC and FPIC sow tension in Marabo

Clashes broke out on Thursday, July 16, 2026, in Marabo, Ituri, between the FARDC and FPIC militiamen (Tchini ya Kilima). They follow the death of militia leader Hérode and his two bodyguards, killed the previous night in Nyakunde. The militiamen accuse the FARDC and attacked military positions to avenge their leader. Separately, in Nyakunde, the death of a woman, wife of an FPIC fighter, sparked protests and the ransacking of an Ebola treatment center.
