Donald Trump had suggested she reconsider the job, and damage-control interviews on pro-Trump outlets failed to quell the controversy. Her departure comes as Trump campaigns for Republicans ahead of the November 3 midterms, amid poor poll numbers and public discontent over the war against Iran, inflation and perceptions of corruption.
