May Day - African Workers Decry Rising Inequality, 'Vanishing Billions' and Elite Control

On International Workers' Day, the African Regional Organisation of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC-Africa) raised concerns about rising inequality and economic hardship in Africa. General Secretary Akhator Joel Odigie noted that significant financial resources are lost annually due to tax avoidance and illicit financial flows. The organization criticized austerity policies affecting workers and called for improved tax systems and better governance. Despite these challenges, ITUC-Africa highlighted emerging opportunities linked to global demand for critical minerals essential for energy transition technologies.
