Vehicle document checks paralyze transport and drive up prices in Lubumbashi

Since July 5, the Haut-Katanga Revenue Directorate (DRHKAT) has launched mandatory vehicle document checks in Lubumbashi, causing a transport paralysis. Fares have jumped by 50%: minibus trips from the city center to Matchipisha rose from 1,000 to 1,500 FC, and taxis from 1,500 to 2,000 FC. Many drivers without proper documents have parked their vehicles or use a 'half-field' strategy, forcing passengers to walk between checkpoints. Compliant transporters and motorcyclists are taking advantage of the situation to impose new rates.
