Iraq parliament elects Kurdish politician Nizar Amedi as president

Iraq's parliament has elected Nizar Amedi as the new president, ending a political deadlock. Amedi, nominated by the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, secured 227 votes against 15 for independent candidate Muthanna Amin Nader. He becomes the sixth Iraqi head of state since the removal of Saddam Hussein in 2003 and pledged to work alongside all branches of government while condemning attacks during the US-Israel war on Iran.
