The United States has sanctioned former Democratic Republic of Congo President Joseph Kabila for allegedly supporting rebel groups in the eastern part of the country. According to the U.S. State Department, Kabila provided material support to armed groups that are the principal drivers of violence and instability in the region. This decision was made under Executive Order 13413, as amended by Executive Order 13671, for materially assisting the March 23 Movement (M23) and the Congo River Alliance (AFC).
