The United Nations Security Council is considering closing the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT) in Arusha, which has been operational for 16 years. The final decision will be made in June 2026, according to Abubacarr Tambadou, Assistant Secretary-General and Registrar of the IRMCT. Closure would mark the end of a justice process spanning over three decades related to the 1994 genocide in Rwanda, during which more than a million people were killed.
