Tabaski 2027: Senegal prioritizes domestic sheep production

In Rufisque, Livestock Minister Me Ousmane Diagne presented the results of Tabaski 2026: 1,069,356 sheep were brought to market, exceeding the target of 900,000, with 144,727 unsold the day after the festival. Livestock farmers, financial partners and security force representatives met for more than six hours to review the campaign and prepare for the 2027 edition, scheduled for mid-May. Farmers blamed unsold animals on the market’s openness to imports and called for better-organized sales points, lower livestock feed costs and easier access to financing. For 2027, the government plans to direct financing toward domestic production.

Alausa Tightens Recruitment Controls in Federal Universities

Nigeria’s Education Minister, Dr Tunji Alausa, has directed vice-chancellors of federal universities to justify staffing requests according to institutional needs, labour-market demand and national human capital development priorities. Universities are to prioritise replacing staff who retire, resign, die, are dismissed or transferred. Requests for recruitment beyond those replacements must show market demand, graduate employability and programme relevance, and establish that proposed courses do not duplicate those at other institutions. The October 19, 2026 directive aims to curb costs borne by the federal budget and improve workforce planning.

Michel Mutombo-Cartier, CEO of the A+ channels, urged media companies to make digital platforms a genuine source of revenue at the second edition of Private Talk in Abidjan on October 19, 2026. He said that posting programme clips on social media without a commercial strategy amounts to supplying content to platforms for free. Digital monetization, he argued, should be considered from the writing stage of a programme. He also announced that Canal+ Group’s MANCALA studios in Abidjan would be made available to independent producers.
