Africa: Macky Sall's UN Bid - a Stress Test for the African Union?

The African Union (AU) rejected a draft decision to endorse former Senegalese president Macky Sall's candidacy for United Nations Secretary-General. Twenty of the AU's 55 member states either objected or requested an extension of the deadline. The bid, submitted by Burundi, blurred the line between a national initiative and a continental endorsement, especially as Senegal, Sall's home country, did not provide formal backing.
