A court in Mombasa is due to deliver its verdict in the trial of Paul Mackenzie and several associates, accused of murdering 191 people, all but one of them children. Prosecutors allege the cult forced children to starve so they could “meet Jesus”; the defendants have pleaded not guilty. Mackenzie founded the apocalyptic Good News International Ministries church in Malindi in 2003, after working as a taxi driver in Nairobi. He preached that education was “evil”, banned medication and urged followers to burn birth certificates and digital IDs.
