At least 38 people were killed in attacks by fighters from the Islamic State West Africa Province (Iswap) against woodcutters and a village in northeastern Nigeria. The attacks occurred near Mafa, where 27 people were beheaded and 18 others were abducted. Since 2009, jihadist violence has resulted in over 40,000 deaths and around two million displaced in the region, according to the UN.
