Nigeria: Lagos-Calabar coastal highway project threatens environment

Nigeria's Lagos-Calabar coastal highway project is controversial for environmental and social reasons. In Akwa Ibom state, the road cuts through Stubbs Creek forest, a protected area with threatened species. The project is estimated to generate 3.5 million tons of CO2, converting the forest from a carbon sink to a carbon source. Local resident Wasi said many coconut trees were destroyed along the ocean side.
