Reform Proposals: Campaign to scrap Law School unsettles Council of Legal Education

At the 2026 Legal Education Summit organized by the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), far-reaching proposals were put forward, including scrapping the Nigerian Law School (NLS) and reducing the law degree from five to three years. NBA President Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, argued that a five-year university program is unnecessary for improving legal education quality. The Council of Legal Education (CLE), which regulates legal training and operates seven NLS campuses, is directly unsettled by these reform calls.
