Western Sahara: Algeria's Unprecedented Stance Under American Pressure

Algeria, traditionally supporting the Polisario Front and advocating for a self-determination referendum, has shifted its stance by welcoming the negotiation process between Morocco and the Polisario Front, under American mediation. Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf stated that Algeria participates as an observer, not as a party to the conflict. This change in position is seen as an implicit abandonment of the independence referendum, in response to increasing pressure from Washington.
