Sierra Leone: treason charges dropped against former president Ernest Bai Koroma

Sierra Leone's judicial authorities have dropped treason charges against former President Ernest Bai Koroma, who was indicted in January 2024 for his alleged role in a failed coup attempt in November 2023. Koroma had been allowed to travel to Nigeria for medical treatment and never returned. The Attorney General's office filed a notice to discontinue the prosecution, stating Koroma is free to return. The decision is seen as a move to promote national unity after the violence that killed 21 people.
