Thiès: Trial opens for murder of muezzin of Ndièye after mosque conflict

The Thiès Criminal Court opened the trial on June 8, 2026, for the murder of Bassirou Mbaye, muezzin of Ndièye village, killed on October 4, 2022, during a conflict over the construction of a mosque. The victim had left the Great Mosque after disagreements and started a private prayer place, which sparked opposition. Twelve people were arrested; eleven appear in court, one died in custody in 2023.

African Court orders Tanzania to end mandatory death penalty, hanging

The African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights has ordered Tanzania to amend its laws to end mandatory death sentences for murder and abolish hanging as the sole method of execution.
