Zamfara transforming education through school meals — IFPRI, WFP

In February 2026, a joint team from IFPRI and WFP, along with government partners from Nigeria's NHGSFP, visited Zamfara to assess the impact of the school meal program launched in 2025. Governor Dauda Lawal had declared a state of emergency in education in 2023, leading to reforms such as school rehabilitation and teacher recruitment. A report published on May 27, 2026 concludes that reliable school meals increase attendance and retention, serving as an education, gender, economic, and resilience strategy.
