2027: INEC fears poll disruption in insecure areas

Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, warned that insecurity could disrupt or prevent the 2027 general elections in some areas. Speaking at a meeting in Gombe, he urged security agencies to take urgent, coordinated action and said he would meet the national security adviser and senior military officials after returning to Abuja. INEC is strengthening cooperation with the police, armed forces and other agencies through the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security to improve intelligence-sharing and operational readiness. Amupitan said early intervention and effective security deployments would be vital to protect voters and ensure credible, peaceful elections.
