Serbia's Vučić concedes election defeat to student-led protest movement

Aleksandar Vučić conceded defeat for his party in Serbia’s snap parliamentary election, while noting that final results were not yet available. Preliminary election commission figures showed record turnout, which commentators had suggested would favour the student movement. Vučić called the election after two years of protests sparked by the 2024 collapse of a train station canopy in Novi Sad, which killed 16 people and became a symbol of corruption and negligence. Celebrations broke out in Belgrade after he made the announcement at the Serbian Progressive Party headquarters.
