Canada wants to expand its LNG business. Critics raise red flags

Canada is seeking to become a major player in global liquefied natural gas markets, with LNG Canada, the country’s first major export facility, operating in Kitimat since 2025. Residents describe disruptive noise, changes to their home territory and worsening asthma, while critics warn about human rights abuses and environmental damage linked to some corporate investors. Mark Carney’s government backs sector expansion amid trade tensions with the United States and efforts to find new partners.
