Guinea: Former Constitutional Court president Mohamed Lamine Bangoura sentenced to seven years in prison

Guinea’s Court for the Repression of Economic and Financial Offences (Crief) sentenced former Constitutional Court president Mohamed Lamine Bangoura to seven years in prison in Conakry on Wednesday for illicit enrichment, corruption, embezzlement of public funds and money laundering linked to the court’s finances. He was fined two billion Guinean francs, barred from holding office for five years, and ordered to forfeit assets in Guinea and Senegal. Two co-defendants who are at large were each sentenced to ten years in prison and fined five billion Guinean francs; the three men must also jointly pay the state 41 billion francs. Bangoura, detained since December 2022, denied the accusations, while prosecutors had sought a ten-year sentence.
