Police arrest man over alleged assault on VIO officers

Police in Plateau State arrested 27-year-old Aweng Josiah, who is accused of mobilising men to assault Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) officers. The officers had impounded his Peugeot 504 bus on September 11, 2026, after he was allegedly found driving without a valid licence and with expired vehicle documents. Following a petition from the state Ministry of Transport on September 21, police opened an investigation and arrested Josiah with help from community members; his alleged assistant remains at large. Commissioner of Police Ayodeji Faniyan condemned the attack and urged the public to report grievances against officials rather than take the law into their own hands.

SAFA says it never lodged a complaint and that the complainants are former executive committee members and employees acting in their personal capacities. The federation plans to submit a statement disputing wrongdoing, appoint an attorney and senior counsel to monitor proceedings, and act against people who damage its reputation.
