A court in Dar es Salaam sentenced Tundu Lissu, leader of the main opposition party Chadema, to four years in prison on Friday, November 6, for inciting violence. He was acquitted of high treason, a charge punishable by death, but convicted of an offense that was not among the original charges. Arrested before the October 2025 presidential election and held for nineteen months, Lissu denounced the verdict as “political persecution” and accused the judges of acting on orders from President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s government.
