Why some African nations are turning down Trump aid money

Ghana rejected a proposed $109m health deal with the US in April over data protection concerns. Kenya signed a $2.5bn deal with Washington in December, but it was delayed by a court challenge. The Trump administration requires recipient countries to increase their own health spending to reduce dependency, leading to resistance. The Kikwit Regional Military General Hospital (Kwilu) received three containers of state-of-the-art medical equipment on Wednesday, July 15, 2026.
