Abubakar laid foundation for Nigeria’s democratic stability, Thabo Mbeki

Former South African President Thabo Mbeki praised former Nigerian Head of State General Abdulsalami Abubakar for laying the foundation for Nigeria’s democratic stability through his historic transition program that ended military rule in 1999. In a keynote address at the public presentation of three books honoring Abdulsalami’s 84th birthday, Mbeki said his brief but consequential tenure (1998-1999) restored democratic governance and established a framework for peaceful power transfers. Mbeki noted that Abdulsalami resisted the allure of power and prioritized national interest by implementing constitutional and electoral reforms. The institutions and democratic structures created under his administration remain the bedrock of Nigeria’s democracy.
