Violence erupted in Mogadishu, the Somali capital, as government forces and opposition-allied militias exchanged fire before a planned protest against President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, who extended his term despite it expiring last month. The fighting damaged buildings and forced residents to flee. The opposition called for a peaceful demonstration, while police linked the violence to "organized attacks" by political groups seeking power. Somalia has also been fighting the armed group al-Shabab since 2007.
