FEC/Tshopo deems duration of provincial tax suspension on foodstuffs insufficient

The Federation of Congolese Enterprises (FEC), Tshopo section, deems the provincial government's two-month suspension of taxes on foodstuffs as partial, aimed at curbing rising rice and cassava prices ahead of the June 30 festivities. Vice President Robert Odundja believes the provincial authority is addressing symptoms rather than root causes, citing demographic factors and the need to remove barriers on agricultural roads. The Provincial Minister of Finance ordered the tax freeze last Friday due to rising palm oil and corn prices. Traders fear a price surge after the tax truce ends if agricultural routes remain impassable.
