Syria abolishes al-Assad-era ‘terrorism’ court as Kurdish tensions flare

Syria's parliament voted to abolish the al-Assad-era 'terrorism' court and nullify its legal rulings. This decision is among the first legislative actions taken by the new parliament formed after the ousting of al-Assad in December 2024. The court, established in 2012, was used to prosecute thousands of Syrians for terrorism-related offenses. In June 2025, President Ahmed al-Sharaa had already issued a decree dismissing 67 judges from this abolished court.
